Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, and The Inheritance Cycle all came to life in Joshua’s medieval / fantasy themed Bar Mitzvah. From the coat of arms to period costumes, this event made the fictional a reality! Joshua’s mom Lina, a sought after photographer with Lasting Memories Photography, has been on the opposite end of the camera for countless dazzling affairs. The creative DIY crafter worked with the vendors listed below to bring her son’s vision to life.
Bar Mitzvah Service
Joshua’s ceremony was held at the Congregation B’nai Israel in Staten Island, New York.
The teffillin Joshua used was originally his great-grandfather Simon’s, and was gifted down to the Bar Mitzvah boy for his special day.
Equally sentimental were the yarmulkes and head coverings provided at the ceremony – both were handmade by Joshua’s mother and grandmother.
Joshua’s Torah portion and subsequent speech were among the most memorable moments of the day, evoking feelings of pure pride from his loving family members.
Already a High Honor Roll student, Peer Leader, and accomplished fencer, Joshua’s touching Torah reading was just another reason to celebrate this young man!
Guests were given a glimpse into the theme with save-the-date cards inspired by the Hunger Games, designed and created by mom Lina.
Genuine Medieval-themed scroll invitations were soon to follow. By now guests knew they were in for something truly special!
Guests were welcomed with a live strolling table serving champagne, bellinis, and pink lemonade.
Talk about the perfect introduction to this party’s theme!
Golden apple place cards played off the fairytale-inspired décor, and were charming embellishments to the gold and burgundy red color scheme.
Centerpieces & Decor
Dragons, knights, swords, shields, and candles transformed the space from a reception hall to a Game of Thrones set, creating an other worldly ambience for Joshua’s guests.
A logo was designed for the party, and dotted the knight’s flags throughout the room.
The space also featured photos of Joshua, showcasing the beautiful traditions which were being celebrated.
This treasure chest served as fantastic décor and of course, a wonderfully creative gift box for the bar mitzvah gifts!
Joshua’s immediate family dressed to match the evening’s theme, wearing vibrant red for the reception.
The kids sat at a long dais-style table that looked more the part of a Medieval feast than a Bar Mitzvah! On each chair was a backpack imprinted with Joshua’s logo.
Hamsa bracelets and dragon key chain favors were held in red treasure chests, and made useful favors for the women and men, respectively.
The entertainment went far beyond just the eye-catching décor, with the traditional Hora dance kicking the night off right!
The violin show by Grigoriy Gonchmakher created a memorable atmosphere for a dance with Grandma.
Mentalist / Magician David Levitan shocked, awed and entertained with his interactive set.
An awesome DJ amped the night’s entertainment up to the next level!
This selfie photo booth was a huge hit with the guests, and also bore Joshua’s logo on the backdrop.
Joshua’s mother, Lina Shuster of Lasting Memories Photography, didn’t just bring her dance skills to the party, she designed and executed much of the day’s décor!

Candle Lighting & Desserts
This candle lighting piece would have looked just as perfect in a dimly lit castle room, and was a unique no-cake design.
There was plenty of dessert to go around…like these chocolate fountains surrounded by a cascading buffet of dipping options!
The day was sweetened by treats made with love by Joshua’s mom, sister, grandma and a close friend. The candy bar included Star of David and Dragon shaped chocolates and cake pops.
The cake’s crown paid homage to Game of Thrones, while the dragon was a gift Joshua received for his 11th birthday in accordance with his love of fantasy stories.
For his Mitzvah Project, Joshua helped a few organizations, including Birthday Wishes Foundation, an organization that helps underprivileged children celebrate birthdays, and “A Package From Home” Organization, which sends packages and letters to soldiers in Israel. According to mom Lina, “Joshua loves to volunteer and give back to the community whenever he can.”
The day was as creative as it was fun, and as loving as it was entertaining. We are so happy to have been included in it! Mazel Tov to Joshua and his entire family!
