Introduction to Custom Invitations

Vintage Wedding Invitations - Custom Designed

An invitation sets the stage for your event as it provides your guest a glimpse of what to expect. In addition to the specific details related to your affair, a well-designed invitation gives you the opportunity to showcase the theme and sets the tone for the event, be it casual or formal black tie.

At Zuri Concepts, we view invitations as “cherishable mementos” of your event that your guests can appreciate for years to come. Most of our creations have been turned into picture frames, décor or jewelry boxes. Consequently we view your event as a unique entity deserving of its own identity. All of the different elements from the colors, décor, food, and stationery should tie together creating the “brand” for your special day. We work very closely with planners, coordinators, event designers and florists to maintain the color scheme and incorporate any design elements / monograms / motifs.

How does it work?

It’s very important to understand you, determine your event’s theme, your personal style, likes and dislikes so we can create the best product for you. During the initial consult we discuss the event’s colors, theme and go over the general components of an invitation (font styles, printing methods, paper types, embellishments, etc). We always encourage clients to bring any “inspiration” photos as it helps us determine a client’s likes/dislikes and speeds up the design process. Pinterest and Google image search are great places to start looking for ideas.

Technology has greatly changed customization and personalization especially in the stationery sector. From improved design software to production equipment, we can create almost anything our clients can dream of at a much lower cost than ever before. Given the endless possibilities available, custom invitations are perfect for your next event.

Based on the type of invitation, we create either a physical sample (for boxes, folios and pop ups) or a digital proof (for simple paper invites). The initial consult to final approval of the design usually takes 2-6 weeks. Once the design is finalized it goes into production which usually takes another 4-8 weeks depending on the size and complexity of the project. Therefore we recommend starting the process 2-4 months before the invitations need to be sent out.

We’ve noticed technology is playing a much larger role in events, including invitations. Overall, nothing will replace the traditional invitation formality, but eRSVP (via event website or email) is becoming a more popular (and cheaper) option. Information cards that have traditionally listed directions and places to stay, are now including event hashtags so guests can stay connected via social media.

As the drive for customization grows, the post office has noticed. Site’s such as Zazzle and Shutterfly offer a myriad of pre-made designs, or the option to create custom postage stamps ensuring no detail of your invitation is left out. We highly recommend these sites and offer postage stamp design services.

Wedding Invitations for a Art Deco Theme

  • For 2015 we see weddings getting grander and more formal (heavily beaded wedding gowns, long trains/capes, dramatic veils, embellished bridesmaid dresses and midnight blue tuxes for men are dominating the runways). As a result, invitations are becoming more formal. There has been a resurgence of traditional (non-digital) printing methods such as letterpress, foil stamping, engraving, embossing – further maintaining the formal trend.
  • Bright, bold colors with metallic accents (think amethyst with gold, emerald with copper, navy with silver) are replacing the softer neutrals and pastels of previous years.
  • Photo save the dates are becoming very popular using photos from engagement shoots. Couples are using black and white photo save the dates for formal weddings and color photo save the dates for more casual affairs and destination weddings.

Bar & Bat Mitzvahs:

Pop-Up House Bat MItzvah Invitations

  • Overall, Bar & Bat Mitzvahs are becoming more and more personalized as boys/girls want their big day to reflect their personality and interests. Pop up invitations are becoming more popular as they are an attractive, fun alternative to the traditional flat card.
  • Bar Mitzvahs – Sports themes are still the most popular but the fonts and paper types are becoming important, think of modern san serif fonts or bold serif fonts paired with organic textures such a wood or raw cotton paper.
  • Bat Mitzvahs – Bright colors and unexpected color combinations (like kiwi green with dark blue) are popular – especially subtle glitter elements, ribbon, embellishments and lace in addition to modern scripts and retro fonts.
